Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) – Two Peasant Women In The Peat Fields

I don’t normally get excited about Gogh, but I love this painting. The color of the sky looks as is the sunset is sliding to twilight. One woman hunches over her knees, keeping them bent as if to take the strain off her back. The other’s shoulder pushes up, as if she’s trying to brace herself on her knee as she lifts an object off the ground. The painting is imbued with the feelings and impressions of the end of a long, hot day of hard work. It communicates all of this so well with broad, painterly strokes. Good stuff.
