“The Elephant Celebes” by Max Ernst (1921)

This reminds me of my Art History final…….that I hope I didn’t bomb. I do know a lot about this work though. Off the top of my head it’s a Surrealist work, from the early 1920s. It does comment on WW1 (and industrialization), which is evident from the giant armored-like elephant figure. All the odd proportions and random objects comment to a dream-like world we are obviously experiencing, not something you’d see in real life. Bunch of phallic symbols (artists love that stuff, and a lot go through periods of sexual frustration in some form, at least all the good ones do.) The sky also has fish/plane figures which messes with the POV of the work, morphing the sky into an ocean. Confusing reality……..that’s about all I got. 😀
