It’s sad (I reckon) because it’s believed that he painted it about an unrequited love. Also, seems he painted it on his deathbed, and when it didn’t sell for the amount he wanted, he went and slashed the painting with a knife. Fortunately it was restored. I’d love to see it in Warsaw. Seems massive and indeed as you said, very erotic. Beautiful piece
