Those barriers have been understood to be fuzzy at best for a long time. It’s an exercise in pedantry to fuss over whether or not works of illustration can qualify as fine art, particularly considering the old masters were all “illustrators” in their time. But this teacher in particular didn’t say “Rockwell is not a fine artist,” as though we were talking about genres or subcategories, she said “Rockwell is not an artist.” Which is an incredibly uneducated and arrogant stance to take.
