I’m really surprised this isn’t as iconic as *Nighthawks*. It has the same level of intrigue with as minimal as five or so colors.
I think we can see some heavy influence from *Son of Man*. The way Magriette was able to place the apple just out of view from knowing. And yet that is what we see with Hoppers’s boy. His face is turned just enough so that we can’t identify him. And that frustrates us, but it also delights us in an odd sort of way.
